How to Choose Colors For Your Newborn Session

January 25, 2022

One of the best parts of newborn sessions is creating the setups for my families.  What goes into that, you ask? Well, when you book your newborn session, you are sent a questionnaire, with some questions about your family, as well as what colors you would like for your setups.  This makes the session much more personalized, and helps me create photographs that you will want to display in your home.

But, how do you decide? For some people, this is very easy, they know what colors they love, and just go with that.  Other's may have a harder time deciding.  I suggest that you think about where you might want to display your images when you print them.  Will they be in your family room? A stairway, or hall, or maybe your bedroom or the nursery.  Select colors that will work well in those areas.   Personally, I love neutrals, and think they work well in most any room, and they tend to keep the focus more on the baby.   It's always nice to have a mix though.  Usually, depending on how cooperative baby is, we get to do about 4 setups for each session, so I suggest at least one neutral color, like cream or beige, or green, and then you can add pops of color in the others if you'd like.  It's also nice to incorporate seasonal colors.  I am always careful to make sure that I do some subtle shots when it comes to the holidays so that your photos can be hung year round.

My most requested color? Green.  There are so many things that can be done with any color, and it's really personal preference.  I am always happy to help, or to select some colors for you if you just can not decide.

Here are some shots from this beautiful baby girl's recent newborn session.  Neutrals and a few pops of color that coordinate with her nursery and the shots turned out great.
