Newborn Sessions with Mistie Rawlings Photography

Newborns are some of my favorite sessions to do.  The excitement of a new baby, all the tiny, adorable little features of that perfect little one, and the beautiful connections with siblings, and parents... these sessions can't be beat.  It's been a while since I posted on the blog, and even longer since I shared any information about my newborn sessions.  I wanted to share some details with you about what a newborn session with me looks like.

  • Booking- It's best to book your session during the second trimester.  This allows time to work out all the details before your session, and allows me time to schedule you for a tentative date.  When you book, I put you on my calendar for around the week after your due date.  I leave some flexibility in my schedule to fit newborns in.  Whether you decided last minute to have a session, or your baby comes early, I've got you covered.  I am usually able to accommodate a last minute booking, but it is definitely less stressful on everyone to plan ahead.
  • What to wear- I am currently working on a what to wear guide, because so many of my clients ask me that question.  My answer is usually "wear something you feel comfortable, and beautiful in, and something that flatters your post baby body".  You will be sitting, lying down, and standing, so clothing that allows you to do all of this is key.  I provide more detail at booking if you would like.
  • What to bring-  I provide all the props.  You only need yourselves, diapering and feeding supplies.  Most of my shots are wrapped, or wearing simple outfits that photograph well.  Clothing with big ruffles, tulle etc, are generally difficult to pose, and don't really fit the style of my setups.  If you would like to bring outfits with you.  I ask that you send me a photo ahead of time, so that I can prepare.
  • What does a typical shoot look like? - I start with family shots, sibling shots and parents alone with the baby.  My studio sessions are informal.  I have a studio bed, which is used for most of the family and parent shots.  This allows for some intimate cuddling, and relaxing shots.  I no longer offer backdrop shots for families.  I prefer to capture the authentic connections.  The rest of the session is all baby.  Prior to your session, I ask for color preferences, and have all your setups ready when you arrive.  This includes boxes, buckets, baskets, wraps, headbands, hats, seasonal items and beanbag.  These shots take up the majority of the session.  This is a great time for parents to relax, catch their breath, and sit comfortably in my lounge area while they watch me pose the baby.
  • What if your baby is cranky?- No worries!  Babies are unpredictable, and newborns are not on schedules.  If you have to feed, diaper, or hold your baby, that's fine!  I allow plenty of time for you to meet your baby's needs.  I will get as many good shots as I can, and I am very patient!
  • When will you get your photos?- I usually shoot for 2 weeks being the longest you will have to wait for your gallery, but generally have the gallery finished and delivered within a week.  I send sneak peek photos the night of, or the following morning.
  • Editing- I edit all images prior to them being presented to you.  This includes removal of baby acne, redness and dry skin, as well as blemishes on family members.
  • Final gallery- Final galleries include images from throughout the session.  I try to select images that are the best representation of the session, and the most flattering to everyone.
  • What's my style? -Take a browse through my newborn section of my portfolio to see examples of my newborn photos.  There are many examples.  Here are a few of my favorites.  They show what the studio looks like for family shots, as well as the newborn setups.  It's very important to select a photographer with a style that matches what you are looking for.
